AS 91634v4 (DT3.42 – 4 credit internal) WEB SITE DESIGN
Demonstrate understanding of complex concepts of digital media
This resource is a standalone resource kit including teaching notes and assessment materials which have  been designed to introduce students to complex concepts of digital media. The material covered will focus  on dynamic websites and offers a good lead into the practical standard AS91635, which takes the theoretical concepts and applies them to the development of a database-driven website using Adobe  Dreamweaver, PHP and a MySQL database.

AS 91635v4 (DT3.43 – 4 credit internalWEB SITE DESIGN

Implement complex procedures to produce a specified digital media outcome
This resource offers teaching notes and assessment materials for the implementation of complex procedures to produce a database-driven website. The content covered is complementary to AS91634 and the teaching notes are designed to introduce students to website development in Adobe Dreamweaver, apply CSS styling and connect to a back-end database (MySQL) using the server-side scripting language PHP. These are the same technologies used in many dynamic websites including eCommerce. Students undertaking this standard should have completed earlier web units and acquired some knowledge of HTML, CSS and preferably had some exposure to programming. All you need to do is download and install XAMPP which is free and bundles Apache Server and MySQL. Apache Server can be installed on the student’s PC or network and the database on the student’s hard drive. We have included instructions in an appendix to the tutorial.

AS 91634/91635v4 (DT 3.42 and 3.43 combined –4 credits internal each) Based on image editing and desktop publishing

Demonstrate understanding of complex concepts of digital media

Implement complex procedures to produce a specified digital media outcome

This resource integrates 3.42 and 3.43and includes an in depth tutorial on Photoshop, XML and InDesign. Photoshop (for image editing) and InDesign (for Desktop Publishing) are two market leading programs in their fields used by professionals the world over. For students considering a career in digital design, experience with one or both programs is a prerequisite. Once students have completed the tutorial they will then be ready to be assessed on both standards.  The final catalogue created can be exported to a web page (html) as well as to pdf from InDesign.

Do I need the latest versions and how do I get them?

The tutorial has been written for version CS6 of both products, however, because only the basic tools are covered, and these have not changed much over the years, it is also suitable for earlier versions.  Pre-CS versions of Photoshop are okay back to about PS6. Because the InDesign section covers XML import, students will need access to InDesign CS2 onwards

Although they can be purchased as standalone products these applications are not cheap.  Currently the best option for schools is the Creative Cloud under a volume license for schools, or a monthly hire at about A$25 per student/teacher. This equates to 80% off the standard retail price. All Adobe products are included and individual purchases are free for the first month.

Combined Self-Teaching Notes and Assessment for both standards  ($375 plus GST)

The desktop publishing version of AS91634/5 (Photoshop/InDesign) contains teaching notes for the practical only. However the introduction to 91635 contains this explanatory note…

“The theoretical component of the standard covers similar material to AS91634 – Demonstrate understanding of complex concepts of digital media. Assessments for both standards are provided with this tutorial and it is recommended AS91634 is undertaken following the completion of this standard as the practical skills acquired during the tutorial will assist the student’s own research into the subject matter for AS91634”

In other words the expectation is that students working through the teaching notes will pick up sufficient theory to undertake 91634
